Down in Flames:
A Mystery
One thing about the schoolhouse intrigues us. There is oral evidence that our schoolhouse burned down and was rebuilt, and oral evidence that it didn't. We found a charred beam in the basement, but that just means something burned down, not necessarily our schoolhouse. We searched the NJ school reports from 1846 to 1852, and from 1870 to 1896 and we found no evidence of a fire. There was also no evidence in the Draft Centennial Report for 1876.
There is possible evidence that the schoolhouse was enlarged at one time (possibly after a fire?).
