For our United States Government today, we began by watching two videos about how governments work and the theories of democracy. After that, we answered a question about the second video, on Town Hall meetings in New Hampshire. We then learned about the Federalist Papers and answered some questions about them. We watched two more videos about the policy-making cycle and English Documents and Democracy, then read a translation of the Magna Carta. Lastly we watched another video on political philosophies from the Enlightenment and, in separate groups, wrote short plays (very short, we didn't have much time) that were interviews with Thomas Hobbs and John Locke.

For my Chemistry and Lab today, I worked with my Dad and Amy, the only other student today, on our Chemistry lesson. We started by doing a recap of things we covered throughout the course, and then moved on the chemical process of smelting, where you melt iron oxide with carbon. The oxygen is attracted to the carbon, separating out the pure iron and the oxygen. That's the gist of in very simple terms. We also learned the phrase "LEO the lion says GER", which stands for "Loses an Electron: Oxidation" and "Gains an Electron: Reduction", which very neatly explains those two processes. We also learned that steel wool can burn and did an unsuccessful experiment to try to prove that burning hydrocarbons produces carbon dioxide.

Reflection

For my Chemistry and Lab today, I first reread the last chapter on redox reactions, wrote a report on electrochemical cells, and then did an experiment to prove that flames are produced by burning gases. After that, we began this week's lesson, which was on another type of chemical reaction: acids and bases. We started by reading through the last chapter to refresh our memories, then did a short experiment to show how oxidation and reduction work. After that, I read my report, and we moved on to acids and bases. We did an experiment with red cabbage indicator to show how to find acids and bases, using it on vinegar, ammonia, baking soda and water to see how it reacted. Finally, we read through the chapter to find out what acids and bases really are.
