Today we went to a fantastic class on some creatures we might see around the lake, Monarch butterflies and Hawks. There was a great presentation for both, and after each, we went out to look for the animals discussed. Unfortunately, we didn't see any Monarchs, but we did see some hawks!

For my Local Study of Mountain Lake today, we began by walking into the Merrill Creek visitor's center, where we (we being all the homeschoolers involved in today's event) made our way to the auditorium and sat down. The presenter, Jane Bullis, introduced herself and talked a little bit about Merrill creek, and then began. The first presentation we saw was on Monarch butterflies, which I already know quite a bit about, but I enjoyed it and it still had things to teach me. For example, I didn't know why first instar Monarch Caterpillars do not chew near the milkweed leaf's veins. It is because their jaws can get stuck together by the milkweed sap, and the veins hold a lot of it! After the presentation, we went for a walk to see if we could catch and tag any, but it was a cool day and we had no such luck. We did, however, find some interesting caterpillars. After a little while, we headed back for lunch.
After lunch, we went to another class, this time on hawks. We learned a lot about identifying hawks, although, as we learned later, learning what they look like doesn't make you an expert at identifying them in the wild. There are six different families of hawks, and we learned how to identify all of them. We learned about Accipiters, which have big wide wings and a big tail, Buteos, which include red-tailed hawks, Falcons, which are fast and agile, Eagles, such as the bald eagle, Ospreys, which cruise low and have a white rump patch, and Vultures, which are bald headed and have a developed sense of smell. After learning these things, we headed out to the hawk watch area to test our skills. There weren't that many hawks around, but I did happen to see an immature bald eagle heading back to its nest and some loons diving about. Other people saw vultures, although I didn't see those. It was getting chilly, so after a while we headed out. I had an excellent day!

For my Local Study of Mountain Lake today, we went to a great program on the Native American Indian Tribe the Lenape, who lived in our area hundreds of years ago before they were driven out by land-hungry Europeans... but I'm getting ahead of myself. Let us start at the beginning, and at the beginning we sat down to watch a presentation on this fascinating subject. The presenter, John Kraft, soon entered, wearing full Lenape dress. He started by explaining a little about how the Native Americans crossed over to American thousands of years ago, during the ice age, on a bridge of ice. He talked a little bit about the other tribes apart from the Lenape, and then homed in on the Delaware Indians, as the Lenape are also called.
He started by explaining about what life was like for the young kids. Not too great at first. Babies were wrapped in cloths an placed on a board, which was then hung across their mother's back so she could carry them and work. When she got tired, she could hang them up on a tree and keep working. This was mainly to keep them safe. Until you were about six, you got free reign, basically. You were allowed to pretty much do whatever you wanted. After you reached six, however, you were considered ready to work. The girls worked hard, cooking and growing food and chopping wood for fires, but it was the boys that got the hardest job. They had to learn to hunt, and sat out in the woods with their fathers for hours, until they knew how to hunt properly. When boys reached twelve, they had to get a spirit guardian, and to this aim, they would sit and sleep out in the woods for days without food in the hope of getting a dream where their spirit animal talked to them. Then they were ready to go out in the woods on their own. He also discussed the different families of the Lenape, the Wolf, the Turtle and the Turkey, and how you couldn't marry inside your own family, for obvious reasons. It was your mother's family that determined what one you were in.
There were many other aspects of Lenape life covered, which mainly came under "food, water, warmth and shelter", but I found those I have talked about to be the ones that interest me the most. After the presentation, we all got a look at some Lenape artifacts he had brought with him, and he answered our questions. I really enjoyed the program!

Reflection
I started my Theater Arts study today by walking into my dancing and singing class, which today was led by Miss Lia. We started off by doing our stretches, which included touching our toes, doing yoga positions and doing a short dancing exercise where we spun and moved into different positions. After that, we sang some scales and got our songs. Mine is a song from Joseph and the Technicolored Dream Coat. Oh, and I'm not the only boy in my class anymore!
In my Actor and Writer Speaks class, Miss Mary gave me the sheets I would have received last week had I not been in Maine. Then I read my monologue and the rest discussed their play ideas they wrote last week. I started working on mine as they wrote theirs in more detail. I will have to do some work to catch up this week. On the plus side, everyone liked my monologue and I had fun writing it!
My monologue:

Lastly, I went on to Mr Perry's Black Light Puppetry class. In the week when I was gone, the others had worked on ideas for puppets, and Jeremy, another boy who is a really great artist, had brought some ideas for the earth cracking open in the second act. After I had shown them some of my music, we began. I drew a design for a moon puppet that went from happy to sad and moved its eyes. We also began on the storyboard for the project. I had a really great time at all of my classes.

I started my Theater Arts study today by walking into my dancing and singing class, which today was led by Miss Lia. We started off by doing our stretches, which included touching our toes, doing yoga positions and moving across the room in different ways. After that, we played a short game, and got our group song. Today, I got the sheet music for my piece, Close Every Door to Me.
In my Actor and Writer Speaks class, we discussed the outlines of our plays, and I realized that maybe I was aiming a bit to high with my outline, which included a subterranean lair, and that I need to give Joe, the angry, honest villain, a bit more face time. We also looked at short play ideas and developed our own plots around them. It was a good class, and I feel that my ideas have improved because of it.
Lastly, I went on to Mr Perry's Black Light Puppetry class. Today, we began to paint. We started by painting flames for use when the chariot of Phaeton scorches the earth. We started in charcoal and painted over them in black paint. Then we took our different designs for puppets (mine was the surprised moon, where the eyes move and the mouth flips), and used the same technique to paint them in black and white. It was excellent, and ended far too soon.

For my Local Study of Mountain Lake today, we went to a program on bats held at the PP and L environmental center. First, the presenters, Hope and Tom, told us a bit about how bats are portrayed as creepy and nasty by the media, and how people are always afraid that bats will fly into their hair or bite them and give them rabies. The truth is that bats are very unlikely to do either of these things. You are more likely to get bitten by the neighbor's dog than a bat. Bats really are amazing creatures, and we watched a slide show where Tom and Hope showed us different types of bats and their amazing anatomy. We also learned about things that are threatening bats, mostly us, but there is also a type of fungus that is killing off the bats all over the states. Pesticides and people who go into bat caves in the winter and wake them up from hibernation also hurt bats.
After the presentation, Tom got out a real bat that they brought with them. He was a really cute Egyptian fruit bat, and he would sit in Tom's hand and look right back at you. He was a sweet little bat, and I think everybody liked him. I certainly did. There was also a dead bat floating in a jar, with the skin and guts pigmented clear so you could see all the bones of the creature inside. It was a fascinating anatomy aide. The class was amazing, and I learned a lot about these useful and awesome creatures.

Today we went on a walk down the road and through the woods. The clouds were cirrus and covered most of the sky. One of the first things I noticed were the trees. They had suddenly exploded into their fall colors, like an arboreal fireworks display! As we walked down the road, my mom commented on how warm it was, although this temperature would have been chilly just a few months ago, and how clean the road looked after we picked up litter yesterday. Then, as we walked up into the woods, we saw some amazing mushrooms, hidden in the tree's shadows. They were white and spongy, and the gills were white, so they were probably poisonous. We saw owl whitewash splashed on the ground. We also heard birds chirping a conversation in the upper canopy, and saw a squirrel who was very surprised to see us! Mom noticed a pokeberry patch in the woods, and she wants to get dye from it. Unfortunately, on the way home, we got barked at by a lot of dogs.

Today we went on a walk down the road and through the woods. I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked out the window this morning, as it looked like it was snowing. I looked again. It was snowing! Snow in October, Wow! I thought. Then I realized that I was going to have to go out in this snow. And so we did. We took coats, rain coats, hats, umbrellas, boots and, in mom's case, gloves. I forgot my gloves, unfortunately, and my hands were cold. The snow was more slushy rain than anything else, and it wasn't settling. The sky was full of stratus clouds and it was quite a dull day. We saw some soggy crows flying about, but all the other birds seemed to be hiding in trees. Smart. We also saw a squirrel trying to pick up an enormous nut. He saw us and scampered. All in all, we didn't see that much and it wasn't such a nice walk.

In my Actor and Writer Speaks class, everyone got to hear the other people in the class read their plays, and I got some great comments and suggestions on my play. Everyone's play is doing very well, although there is a lot more work to do before they are performed. We also looked at the pictures everyone drew of their characters, and learned how to properly format a script. It was great!

Today we went on a walk down the road and through the woods. The snow has melted now, and it is quite a bit warmer, 51.3 degrees Fahrenheit, in fact. The trees are slowly going more and more colorful, golds and reds showing through the green. But as fast as they are growing more colorful, they are dropping off their branches are falling to the soggy ground. As we walked down the road, we were walking over fallen leaves, soaked to the ground. They had a funny smell, which filled the air. In the woods, where it was darker, we encountered some mushrooms, one of which didn't appear to have gills! We'll have to keep an eye on that one. As we walked through the woods, I smelled the fallen leaves and saw a squirrel scrambling up a tree. At the bottom of the hill, mom got us both to stand still and look around us. I saw two turkey vultures, what was probably a red tailed hawk, and some trees that still had green leaves on them. All in all, I rate this walk 4.5 out of 5.

For my Local Study of Mountain Lake today, we began by walking into the lower area of Shippen Manor, where Andy was waiting for us in full French and Indian war soldier's attire. We started by doing a short recap of all the things we talked about last time we were at Shippen Manor, then moved on to the French and Indian war. We started with a discussion of the elements that led to the biggest and last (oh yes, there were many) French and Indian. The Europeans stole the Lenape people's land, and the warriors, frustrated, led raids on European villages, killing men, women and children. The British and the Iroquois, who were allied with the British, attacked the Lenape and the Hurons, their enemies who had sided with the French. The French, the Lenape and the Hurons fought back, and a huge war started overseas. In fact, some say the French and Indian war should have been World War One. Anyway, after we had discussed this a bit, we learned who started the French and Indian war: George Washington. He led his troops into battle with the French when they were supposed to be spying on them. It was a very confusing mess and an accident, I'm sure, but he did start the French and Indian war. Anyway, the war was long and bloody, but with the capture of Quebec, it began to turn in the British's favor. The rest dragged out until the French surrendered and the British captured most of North America. Unsurprisingly, the Iroquois did quite well out of this war.
While we mainly discussed the French and Indian war, we talked about many other subjects, including the lovely practice of scalping that came from that period. Mr Andy used me to show me how a scalping would occur in the middle of combat: very quickly and painfully. Amazingly, you could survive from being scalped. We also saw a rifle from that period being shot, and discussed the owners of Shippen Manor throughout the ages. I rate this program 5/5.

For my US History study today, I went to a mock Archeological dig. The host, Big Dog (his nickname), showed us some slides and talked about how archeologists look at evidence and arrive at logical conclusions. After the short slideshow, which was excellent and got me into the right mind-frame, we began digging. At the top was a garbage heap of pottery, glass, and stone, but as we dug deeper, we found bones. Many different human bones, jumbled around. We also found a fire pit, and bones in it. Bones in a fire pit. We may have found evidence of cannibalism among the early Native Americans, but we shouldn't jump to conclusions that quickly. There have been cases of this observed by earlier missionaries, which you can still read about today. After this grisly discovery, we cleaned our squares and finished up.
After the dig, we had lunch and played a game of Settlers, which was inconclusive (we had trouble finishing in time). Lastly, we watched a presentation on how we can learn from how the Native Americans lived sustainably, to live sustainably today. It was very thought-provoking. I rate this program 5/5.

For my US History study today, I went to a mock Archeological dig. The host, Big Dog (his nickname), showed us some slides about the Inuit, who still use the same kinds of tools our early Native American Indians used, but had a completely different lifestyle. While our dig shows evidence of cannibalism among the New York Paleo-Indians (nasty!), the Inuit live in a family unit and hunt caribou for food. There are many differences in their lifestyle and culture, if not in their technology. After that, we headed out to the dig. Today, me and Kevin (my partner) were clearing off the hearth in our square, removing any bones we came across and digging down to the bottom of the hearth. I also helped some other people clear their hearth a bit. Several new and grisly finds: a skull, a lot of toe bones and many ribs. After we had cleaned our square up, we all headed to lunch.
After lunch, we went down to the river and talked about how the Native Americans survived on the things available in our area. There wasn't that much, so they had to compensate by being smaller. We also played a new game, called Settlers of the Stone Age, which was sort of like Settlers of Cataan but actually quite different. At the end of the game, it turned out my group had been playing it slightly wrong, so the game wasn't really won, although Kevin claimed victory. Last thing we did today was to discuss the things we had done and talk about how to remember the things we had learned.

For my US History study today, I went to a mock Archeological dig. The host, Big Dog (his nickname), finished the slide show about the Inuit with us. We compared the tools of the Inuit with the tools of our Mesolithic Native Americans (good analogy), and their cultures (bad analogy). While the Inuit dote on their children, revere their elders, and are largely peaceful, our Mesolithic people would eat enemies from other clans. After this, we headed out to the dig. Today, Kevin and I removed our hearth and began to dig under it. We found hard, sterile yellow soil and a big black expanse of soil in the north-west corner of our square. It, in fact, stretched throughout the entire dig. This was the remains of a pit, a shallow grave that housed a horrible find. Not horrible because it was a skeleton, but because the skeleton had no feet and probably no hands. The remains of a cannibalized man, probably a warrior taken in battle, who was ritually tortured, killed and eaten. This was, you have to remember, in the Mesolithic, and the Native Americans believed that if your enemy was strong, eating him made you strong; if he was smart, eating him made you smart. This was a completely horrible find, but people throughout history have done the same thing, sometimes ritually and sometimes out of hunger. Anyway, we almost completely unearthed the skeleton today, and we will finish tomorrow.

For my US History study today, I went to a mock Archeological dig. I went early with Big Gog to help him set up the exhibit. We took the artifacts from the different levels and sorted them onto different tables, such as the first level and modern garbage table, which contained the garbage that the settlers dumped in a privy and the things we found in level one that weren't Native American. On the second table, we placed the Native American bones and tools from the second level, which told a possible story of a starving tribe eating their own dead to stay alive. A horrible story, but one which somehow made the people whom it was about more human than the people in the third level, who turned torture and cannibalism into a ritual. The third level had an entire human skeleton with the hands, feet and one of the lower arms missing. After we had discussed our findings and our stories, we had a potluck and finished up.

We started by singing this time, and we actually didn't get time to do any dancing. I sang my Close Every Door To Me song, learned a new song, and sang my main song with the Cd. It was hard, because it doesn't have any melody line! After that, the girls sang their songs.
In my Actor and Writer Speaks class, we didn't have Miss Mary! Fortunately, Miss Nicole more than handled the job. First, we worked on an exercise where we tried to figure out what characters would say what lines. After than, we completed an exercise we started last week, where we had two characters (randomly selected) discussing a controversial topic. I had a great time!
Lastly, I went on to Mr Perry's Black Light Puppetry class. Today we cut out my moon and made the eyes so that they could move. We also cut out the flames and the sun chariot, and made the ground for the set. We made two boxes that would come apart as an earthquake. It was a wonderful class, and I learned a lot.

Today we went on a walk down the road and through the woods. The clouds were cirrus and there were very few of them, just a few wispy tendrils blowing through the bright blue sky. It was a bit nippy at the beginning of the walk, but it got warmer as we went along, and soon I didn't need my coat or my hat. It was quite a contrast to Saturday, when it rained all day. It is very beautiful. Anyway, we saw a LOT of Robins this morning, flying about and chirping to each other. We also saw a cloud of Starlings flying in a flock above us. Isn't it cool how they all move together in a big, squawking mass, always staying together but changing shape constantly? Well, I think it is. After the flock of starlings had flown off, a small-ish bird of prey with a long tail flew by us. It was probably a kestrel. A little bit later, we saw it trying to fend off another kestrel, flying further and further away from us. Lastly, we saw a strange-looking woodpecker, a very cute little nuthatch, and a red squirrel. I had a great walk!

For my Local Study of Mountain Lake today, we began by welcoming an architect who specializes in historical restoration, Mr Michael, into our community center. Michael started out by telling us about himself and the place he works, which is an old, converted barn. He showed us a short slide show about the Vass farmstead, which allowed us to recognize some of the features that were common in buildings of that period. After that, he went into different styles, such as Neoclassical, Victorian, Federal and some others which you might see on old houses in this area. He explained the foundation stones of building design, proportion, balance, scale and context, which determine whether the building is pleasing to the eye. It was very interesting, and we looked at the results of people who broke those rules without knowing what they were doing. Their houses looked awful! After that, we looked at the deconstruction and relocation of an old house, still in good condition, which was slated for demolition as it was on a building site. They literally took it apart, piece by piece, tagged all the pieces and made a map of the house so it could be put back together properly at the other end. After a little break, we examined some photos of houses around the lake and learned about their form, style and how far back they dated to. Lastly, we looked at Michael's tools for working with wood, which were fascinating! I rate this program 5/5.

The cirrus and cumulus clouds covered about three-quarters of the sky. The sun made the golden, red and orange leaves that covered the ground shine. We saw many trees that were almost completely leafless, and a few that were still covered with colorful leaves. The sun did get in my eyes a bit, but I managed to look away while still seeing quite a bit. As we started out, some Jays were screeching in the trees down our street, and a couple of crows were flying overhead. In the woods, I saw a couple of Robins flying about. I did pretty good on both, I think. This week, I need to plug the chords from Close Every Door to Me into my Notion 3 program, so I can practice without the melody line. I have a new song to learn, too!
In my Actor and Writer Speaks class, we talked about what we had done the week before, when Miss Mary hadn't been there, and read through the pieces we had written. We also looked at the exercise we had done the week before, and talked a bit about it. After that, we read through our scenes. Everyone's was excellent! Unfortunately, I didn't get to read mine.
Lastly, I went on to Mr Perry's Black Light Puppetry class. Today we began to paint in the black light. We painted the flames, sun, mountains and other bits and pieces, including the eyes of my moon. It was amazing how the paint looked great in the black light, and really bad in normal light. It was a great class and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
