United States History

Reflection

For our United States History Study today, we went to the Johnson Ferry House, which was where the owner of the dock Washington and his men landed after crossing the Delaware on Christmas Eve lived. We were greeted at the door by a very nice lady who told us about the history of the house and the role it played in the United States revolution. The house was, at that time, owned by a very proactive patriot, who, on the night of the crossing, were helping to ferry troops across the river. She also shared with us a very different story of the Battle of Trenton. Yes, the Hessians were caught by surprise, but they probably weren't all drunk as the popular story goes. That was added in, most likely, after World War II, to belittle the Germans. After talking to her for a bit, we had a look around the house, which was wonderfully restored. We also had a look at the rest of Washington Crossing State Park, and watched a short movie on the Battle of Trenton in the visitor center, before heading home.

United States History

Reflection

For our United States History Study today, we went to Brandywine Battlefield, where George Washington's men and the redcoats, commanded by General Howe, clashed and decided the fate of Philadelphia. To start with, we went to the visitor center and looked at the small museum they had on the battle. It was very interesting, as museums on battles usually are, and they had a good collection of weapons and artifacts. After that, we watched a short movie about the battle, which was quite exciting, with a large number of reenactors running around, getting shot and firing their guns. Through it we learned the story of Brandywine Battlefield. A group of Quakers, reluctant to support either side as their creed told them that they should not hurt any human being, found their farm the site of a large battle between the English and Colonial armies. While George Washington and his aide, the young Frenchman Lafayette, threw their forces at what turned out to be a diversionary force, the British General Howe outflanked them, hitting them from behind and forcing a retreat, leaving the path to Philadelphia open. After the battle, the British, angered that the Quakers had let George Washington use their house as a headquarters, trashed the house and destroyed the fields. It would be about five years before the area fully recovered.

After watching the movie, we headed over to George Washington's headquarters, the house of Quaker farmer who let him use it. There, a tour guide, an intern at the center, showed us through the house and filled in the more personal gaps in the story we had learned. He also told us how the center had been recently shut down by the state, and was closed until a local group raised enough money to open it again. My hat's off to them! After an interesting and insightful tour, we headed back to the trailer.

United States History

Reflection

For our United States History Study today, we went to Valley Forge National Park, where George Washington and his men weathered a long, bitter winter and learned how to fight as a disciplined army. To start with, we went to the visitor center, where we got a map of the entire site and decided to walk along their seven-mile (but relatively flat) looping trail. Along the way, we saw many monuments erected to honor the site, including an enormous archway that we walked through; and reproductions of the log cabins the soldiers built to weather the winter. We got to look in some, and it looks like there would have been about 12 men to a cabin. And these are not big cabins! We also looked at the recreation of Washington's quarters at Valley Forge, inside the actual house where he, his wife and many of his aides stayed. After we looped back to the visitor center, we had a look through their interesting museum on the men who stayed in the camp, and watched a short movie on the conditions and their training by Baron von Steuben. It was an excellent walk, although I think a better idea of the history could have been conveyed on the trail.

United States History

Reflection

For our United States History Study today, we went to John James Audubon's house at Mill Grove, where Audubon spent three years hunting, studying and drawing his wonderful pictures of birds. We started by going to the house itself, which was beautiful and was now in use as a museum on the life and works of Audubon. We watched a short introductory video on his life, his pictures and his book The Birds of America, a stunning full color work almost entirely composed of his paintings. After that, we looked through the museum, which was fascinating and included many prints of Audubon's bird paintings. One interesting thing I learned: as well as writing The Birds of America, Audubon started on The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, but died before completing it. His son, also an artist, finished the book. Lastly, when we had finished touring the museum and the museum's gift shop, we went for a leisurely walk around the Audubon estate. It was a beautiful day, and I think that I got a better idea of who Audubon was and what he did.
