For my Environmental Science today, I went to a teen climate change summit at Rutgers University. We started by attending a keynote speech where we learned about climate change from Vernand Williams, who does it in a very interesting way, by narrating a video showing climate change and the problems facing humanity. It was very amusing, but he made some very serious points. After this, we broke up into groups and went to our first class, on New Jersey's Climate and Weather. The presenter was excellent and really made the subject material interesting. After lunch, we headed to Using Underwater Gliders to Measure Climate Change, where we learned all about the amazing unmanned vehicles that scientists use to study the oceans. The presenter, who was one of the scientists at Rutgers who worked with the vehicles, obviously loved his job and was eager to show us all about it. We headed back to the lecture hall and watched a presentation on how to plan our project. Lastly, we brainstormed ideas for our project and headed out.

Reflection
For our Environmental Science today, we began by watching a video called Money on the Land. It was an excellent, brief look at the industrial revolution and its effects on America, starting with the death of the idealistic American image of happy farmers working their fields, replaced by a large-scale, mechanized farming process. New equipment became available to farmers, but they often had to take loans from businessmen to get them, and they could lose everything if the venture didn't pay off. With the discovery of oil, the gap between the rich and poor Americans got even wider, leaving farmers destitute and "robber barons" flaunting their massive wealth. Today, in our post-industrial country, we owe a lot to the industrial revolution for things that seem commonplace. But the industrial revolution was also responsible for the death of an image central to American culture: the American farmer.
After we finished watching the video and had lunch, we headed over to the hall for a talk by Mike Dennis, who owns a business called Traditional Earth Skills. He was kind enough to come and talk to us (as well as show us, later) about how Native Americans in America used energy and resources before the Europeans arrived. His talk was excellent, going into detail on the way the Lenape, our local Native American Indian tribe, as well as other tribes, lived and conserved energy. He also talked about his time living in a tipi, the traditional structure that everyone thinks of when they think of Native American Indians. After his talk, he showed us two ways early Native Americans would make fire, using a hand-drill and a bow-drill. It's much harder to get coals from a hand drill, but the bow-drill required more work to set up. After we had all got to try both these methods, we headed outside and tried our hands at throwing Atlatls. They're actually harder to throw than they look! Only one person was able to hit the stump we were aiming for. With that, we finished our day.

Environmental Science
Reflection
For our Environmental Science today, we began by talking about our day last week, and all the cool things we learned from Mike Dennis. Then we went over our homework and watched the next video in the Earth's Changing Climate course, The Human Factor. After this, we watched the next episode of the Carbon Videos, which showed us, in simple terms, many of the things we had just seen. After lunch, we headed over to Shippen Manor, where Andy Drysdale, the curator, and Duane Sweet, a former iron miner, told us all about the iron mines in the area and Oxford furnace. It was a great day!
