United States Government

Reflection

For our United States Government today, we went on a field trip to see the County Courthouse and our Freeholder, Rick Gardener. We started the day by heading to the County Courthouse, where, after passing through the metal detector, we met the Under-Sheriff, Frank Stettner, who gave us a great tour around the courthouse. We toured the building, learning about the role of the sheriff and his subordinates in protecting the staff in the building, looked in on the officers' workplace, and went upstairs to the courtroom. We had to be very quiet while entering the courtroom as jury selection for a case was currently in progress. When there was a recess, the judge actually came down and talked to us, answering some of our questions, which was a great honor. He had to rush off to continue the case quite soon, though, and we continued on with Frank. He showed us the civil court, which was not in session, and answered the last of our questions about the court. Lastly, we met with the County Clerk and asked her some questions.

In the afternoon, we went down to the Wayne-Dumont Building, where we met with one of our Freeholders, Rick Gardener. We chatted with him for a good long time, and he answered many of my questions about the executive and legislative branches of County Government. After we had finished our chat, he showed us around the office where we met many other people who work there. After someone called Mr Gardener and told him that one of his cows had escaped, he had to go and we headed out.

We did several experiments to show the power of electrons, electricity being one of the four fundamental forces that keep the universe ticking. It was an excellent lesson.

For our last United States Government class today, we began by discussing what we most enjoyed learning about in the class. I picked open government and the separation of powers. After we had our discussion, we watched several videos on women's suffrage, learning about the conditions suffragettes suffered through in prison to achieve their goal. Then we watched some Hippocampus videos on our rights and the fight to see that they can't be taken away by anyone. Lastly, we interviewed John Fisher, who is on our town council, about events in the township. It was an excellent final class.
