Today we went for a cold, windy walk. It was blowing really hard today, as we could see from the cumulus clouds above, which were moving incredibly fast across the blue sky. It was bitter cold, and the wind really made us shiver and pull our coats on tighter, but at least it wasn't raining. The leaves underfoot are no longer crunchy, and the trees stand bare and thin, waving in the wind. We spotted a group of crows in the field, which took flight and appeared to have white wings, although we think that was just the sun glancing off them. I had a great walk!

Today we went for another cold, windy walk. The sky was filled almost to the brim with light gray stratus clouds, although it didn't look like any rain was on its way. The sun only peeked through a couple times, and the wind wasn't quite as bad as yesterday. There were some birds flapping around by the road, and mom noticed a cardinal among them. There were also quite a few sparrows, and I thought I saw a turkey vulture circling overhead. As we were walking back, I noticed a red squirrel. He was very cute!

Physical Science

Reflection

In our Physical Science Class today, we started off by reviewing what we learned about work in the last lesson, and then applied what we knew about velocity to an experiment involving a small car crashing into a stationary car on a ramp. We looked at the amount of time each took passing certain lines on the ramp after they bounced off each other. Then we made them stick together by using a piece of clay on the second car. After that, we calculated the velocity change after the collision and the loss of kinetic energy. Lastly, we reviewed the concepts covered and looked at rotation in our Joy of Physics book, where we learned about radians (which are used in physics instead of angles) and how they can help us in physics.

Today we went for a slightly warmer walk. The sky fluctuated between being dark and foreboding and bright and sunny. The sun did poke its head out a few times, which was nice. The wind did blow quite hard around the midpoint of the walk, but mostly it was reasonably still. The clouds overhead, however, were moving very fast. As we started out, we heard what we at first thought was a red-tailed hawk, but was probably a jay. It was very noisy! We also spotted some turkey vultures landing, and in some cases attempting to land, in the field. One of them seemed to be having real trouble landing as the wind kept blowing him back up, and he didn't manage to land before all then others lifted off again. It was a nice walk!

Theater Arts

Reflection

I started my Theater Arts study today by walking into my dancing and singing class, which today was led by Miss Lia. We began by playing a short reflex game, and then sang our "The Farmer and the Cowman should be Friends" song. We sang that a few times, and then moved on to our solo songs. I sang "Close Every Door to Me" with the tape, which was good although I need to work on my timing for next week. After that, the girls sang their songs and we finished up.

In my Actor and Writer Speaks class, we went through our newest scenes in our plays. Mine needs a bit of work, but it still was pretty funny and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Then we headed down to Mr Danny's class, where I had bits of my play performed by the students in it. It was a great experience to see it live, and to hear and see the actor's interpretations of my characters. The other playwright's plays were look really good too. I enjoyed the class.

Today we went for a winter walk. A cold wind was blowing, and I was glad that I had my fluffy hat, gloves and coat. The clouds were all cirrus, and there weren't that many, so there was nothing to protect us from the wind. It snowed over the weekend, and all around us were icicles and snow. The eaves of houses were crowned with icicles, and snow fell with alarming frequency from trees, although none hit us. There were many birds fluttering about, and we did see a red-bellied woodpecker. However, apart from a few crows, that was pretty much all we saw.

As we were walking in the woods, the trees creaked ominously around us, but we did see some little birds flying around as we walked out of the woods. In our Physical Science Class today, we started off by reviewing what we learned about torque in our last lesson. I have a correction to make: torque is the distance times force, so it is a measure of the amount of force being applied to make something rotate at a certain distance. We used this to solve a see-saw problem and prove that our masses (when we stood on the see-saw) canceled each other out, and the net force and torque were zero. After that, we learned about objects where the net force and torque is zero (they are at rest), and did an experiment involving springs and elasticity.

For my Local Study of Mountain Lake today, we began by running through our presentation on the lake, and then performed it for real. It was exciting and kind of scary to get up and present our findings, even though it was just friends and family around. I think we did a good job! After the presentation, we talked to people about the project. I enjoyed the event!

In our Human Anatomy and Biology Lesson today, we studied the human brain. To start with, we watched a video lecture about the eye, which filled me in on the details of the eye and how it functions. Physical Science

Reflection

In our Physical Science Class today, we started off by reviewing a few of the fundamental physics equations, and a few concepts we came across last time: torque and static equilibrium. Then we moved into elasticity. After first talking about elasticity and some equations using it, we began on our first experiment, where we looked at the swing of a yo-yo and calculated a few things about it. After that, we used a spring and a weight in a similar experiment, calculating the speed of the spring's bounce and seeing what we could derive from that. Lastly, we talked about waves: ocean waves, sound waves and more. It was a great class, and I learned a lot.
