For my grammar today, I worked on rewriting a paragraph about things people hate to wait for. But whoever had written the paragraph had used far too many "and"s, so I had to rewrite it, combining the long run-on sentence full of "and"s into several small sentences. When I was done, mom went through it with me.

For our French today, we were supposed to write letters (in French, of course) about a vacation (to wherever we wanted in France, it didn't matter). I decided to continue the saga of Eric le Mouton (Eric the Sheep), in which poor Eric has devoured the entire contents of the town, and all the shops have closed because of it. There is nothing to eat, so poor Eric and his family decide to take a plane to Disneyland Paris, where they are sure there is lots of food, although Eric is hungry enough to eat the rides right now. I looked up the words I didn't know on a french translation website.

A Local Study of Mountain Lake

Reflection

We started our study of Mountain Lake by learning about fossilization. Fossilization can can happen in lots of ways, either by falling into tar, being covered up by ice, or being covered in rock and sand. When creatures are fossilized, their bones are eventually replaced by the stone they are covered in. When we had finished up learning about that, we moved on to making our fossils. We made imprints of shells, shark's teeth, seeds etc. in sand. Then we poured plaster of Paris on top of that and left them to dry. When we had finished that activity, we wrote up our articles of different ways mammoths were preserved.

I started my algebra 1 lesson today by working on linear functions. What is a linear function? It is a function that can be expressed by the equation y (y being a dependent variable, meaning it depends on x for the equation to work) = rx (r = some constant rate, x = an independent variable, meaning it is independent from y) + n (n being a number, any number). Let me repeat that, because it's probably hard to get it with all my little notes in there. y = rx + n. That is how you express a linear function. If you put the linear function on a graph, it goes up or down (depending on whether there is a - or a + in the sum) in a straight line. Using this idea, I both explored linear functions introduced in the lesson, and also applied that knowledge to some new linear functions in the supplementary exercises. Dad said I did well!

Today, for our study on Ancient Greece, we traveled to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York city. In the Met, we walked along on the ground floor until we came to the Greek art exhibit. Big Dog, our archeology instructor, was there waiting for us. When everyone had arrived, Big Dog began. He explained how the Greeks were like us, that they had to eat, breath, sleep etc. and also how they were different. They basically said to themselves "We are civilized. How are we civilized? We have politicians, mints, treasuries, theaters, art galleries, beautiful and well-designed cities with pipes to carry away waste. All those other people, all those other civilizations, don't have what we have. And thus they must be barbarians." Obviously, the Greeks drew a big circle that said "The Civilized World" and put themselves right in the middle! As we walked around the art exhibit, we were each to choose a certain type of artifact and answer some brain-stretching questions about it. I chose pots with the Attic art style. The Attic style was also called a black-figure style, and is often what you think of when you think of Greek pots. It had an orange background, with black figures painted on it, but it was such a clever technique that they used to make them, using different glazes which were heated at different temperatures, that no one else could copy them! When I finished up that, I took a walk through the exhibit to get a very basic idea of the whole subject, and we finished up with Big Dog showing us a mysterious (mystery in Greek means "not to be spoken of") sculpture. It is mysterious because although we know the names of the two goddesses and the man in the picture, the picture was from a cult whose members were not to give away their secrets on pain of death. It remains unknown to us to this day. With that, we finished up.

In my algebra 1 lesson for today, we mostly went through different ways of displaying the problems we did in the last lesson. By using the graphing calculator and tables, you were able to get some interesting effects. But it wasn't really what I was looking for, and although there were definitely some useful bits, I didn't find the lesson as a whole as useful as the ones before it. That said, there were a lot of things that were good about this lesson. I learned that on a graph, all the points are basically a step across and a step up, like a stair. When you get the difference between two points, the step up and across, you can calculate the slope of the graph.

We started our science class this afternoon on matter with dad giving a little recap on what we learned in the last lesson. Then we moved on to learning about substances that mix together in a way that you can easily separate them out afterward. We did an experiment with salt and water to show this. We mixed the salt into the water, and then separated them out by boiling the water off. It works because salt boils at a different temperature to water. Then we learned about substances that don't mix so nicely, specifically sodium with chlorine, and alkali metals with water. They mix with a big bang! This is because the atoms that make up those substances are each needing something. Sodium has an extra electron it doesn't want, and chlorine needs an extra electron. Because they are both itching for this electron, they are highly reactive. When sodium and chlorine atoms hit each other, boom!, that extra electron from the sodium is grabbed by the chlorine. But the process of transferring the electron releases an enormous amount of energy in the form of heat. But even that explosion is relatively tame compared to mixing alkali metals with water. Imagine setting off a depth charge in a bathtub, and you've pretty much got what it is like. After these explosive subjects, we moved on to how things separate out into different colors. We took a marker, rubbed it along the bottom of a small piece of paper, and dipped it into water. The color spread upwards with water, and separated into its color components. We finished up by learning about crystals, and beginning to grow our own.

In my algebra 1 lesson for today, I worked on the workbook activities for lesson six. As you may recall from my Algebra 1 report on Wednesday, I learned about how to calculate the slope of a graph. That's what we were doing today. We took the two equations from lesson 5, Reed's Reasonable Rates (RRR) and Interest Free Loan (IFL), and calculated the slope of the graph. The way you calculate the slope is to take two points of a graph, record the x and y values of those points, and then divide the y values by the x values. The equation for this is y1- y2 divided by x1- x2. The answer you get is the slope, which will be a positive number if the slope is going up, or a negative number if it is going down. When we had finished that, we went on to calculating the slopes for some more equations. I think I really got what we were talking about this lesson!

When everyone had arrived for our Geography lesson (everyone being Amy, Lyn and me, as Matthew and Rachel were sick), we began to learn about cost-benefit analysis. What is cost-benefit analysis? It is where you take the costs and benefits of a decision (duh!) and decide whether that decision is worth it. For today, we learned about the people of San Martin Alto, and how they were deciding whether or not to graze alpacas on the paramo, which is fragile land that holds water above the village. There were a few other options, and we found the costs and the benefits of each one. When we were done, we filled out some worksheets to see how much we had learned in this section of the course.

I started my algebra 1 video lesson 9 today by working on some linear functions that were designed in three categories. The first problem was a simple algebraic problem which I solved quickly both intuitively and by rearranging the equation. The second problem started with a real-life situation which I'm not sure I would ever encounter. It stated that you have been asked to drain a 15,000 gallon pool. You rent a pump that will drain 240 gallons per hour. How long will it take to drain the pool? This one was a bit harder, but with a little help from dad, I solved it. Then I did a arbitrary algebraic equation, which was a long and mangled string of variables, numbers and fractions that I eventually, with a bit of help from the video, whittled down to a point where it was easy to solve. I really enjoyed this lesson, and I think I learned a lot.

Speech: The Actor and Writer Speaks

Reflection

When we arrived at Growing Stage for the last Actor Speaks class of this term, we were a little bit early. All the actors that had arrived filed into the theater, parents in tow, and took a seat while we waited for the rest of the troupe. When they arrived, we started off by doing some acting games, like Taxi, and some warm ups! Then, da da dum.... we had our scripts read live by actors in front of our parents and teachers. It went very well. My play was very humorous, while others were less so. I think my favorite part of my play was Bill was asking Joe his name:

Bill: Name?

Joe: What do you mean by that?!

Bill: What is your name?

Joe: Joe.

Bill: What is your last name?

Joe: Joe.

Bill: (Sighs.) No, that was your first name. Your last name is not the same.

Joe: Who says it can't be? Are you threatening me?!!

It was a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed getting up on stage and making a fool of myself. Really. Anyway, after my play was performed, I sat down in the hot seat, and was asked questions about how I wrote the play. I really had a good time, and everyone did a great job.

In my algebra 1 lesson for today, I watched a video about modeling real-world problems with linear functions. Whoa! Big words! But don't worry, it really wasn't all that hard. What we did was: 1) Take some real-world data (in the first activity, the diameter of an ink blob for the number of drops put in), 2) translate that data into a chart, 3) use the chart to create a linear function and a graph, and 4) use the linear function to answer some questions and predict things. I learned that the data you gather doesn't always create a perfect linear function, so you have to choose the best fit. I really think I learned a lot about linear functions and how you can use them practically. This was the last lesson in the series, too, so next time we will go on to new and exciting problems!

I started my algebra 1 lesson today by working on the relation between bottle caps and pins. Specifically, how many pins per bottle cap. Now, we knew that not all the bottle caps we had would weigh the same, as they were from different makes, and that not all the pins would weigh the same, but we figured that it would give us an approximate linear function. We weighed the bottle caps and pins, and wrote down the numbers we got. Then we wrote them down in the spreadsheet program, on the computer. We used the numbers from the spreadsheet to create an approximate graph, and then used the regression curve tool to find the straight line that best fitted the data. We printed this out, and used the formula we got from it to answer some questions. When we had finished that, I worked on magic squares in my Go Figure! and Penrose the Mathematical Cat books. It was a lot of fun, but there was one type of magic square, called a knight's move magic square, that I couldn't quite get. Maybe I will tomorrow!
