Human Anatomy and Biology

Reflection

We started our our Human Anatomy and Biology Lesson today by working on some experiments in the Bodyworlds Supplementary Course. We basically took a look at the chemical processes that occur in our digestive system to help us break down food. We looked at digestion of fat with and without the aid of bile, and found that the reaction that happens to break up fat in our body is greatly sped up by the presence of bile. We looked at how the body breaks down starch into sugar, and demonstrated that amylase, pancreatin and my saliva all break down starch. We also added pancreatin to a starch solution and tested for the presence of sugar by using a Fehling's solution (made of Fehlings one and two) and observed the color change when it was heated. The color change demonstrated that the starch solution had in fact been broken down by the pancreatin and that sugar was now present.

Physical Science

Reflection

For our Physical Science class today we started by looking at the nature of mirrors in our Joy of Physics workbook. However, we quickly moved on to learn about concave and convex lenses, and drew ray diagrams to demonstrate some of the really cool effects that can occur if you move around the lens or the object being focused on. We showed the focal lengths and image lengths of the different lenses, and explained how magnification works. Next, we moved on to other facts about light, including rainbows and mirages. We also found out about looming, the opposite of a mirage, which often occurs at sea when the water is colder than the air around out. If a ship is just beyond the horizon, the light can distort to show an image of the the ship floating in the air. Lastly, we learned a bit about Albert Einstein and how he helped start Quantum Theory.

Human Anatomy and Biology

Reflection

We started our our Human Anatomy and Biology Lesson today by going to the Body Worlds 2 exhibition at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. I had, I admit, had some misgivings about going to the exhibit, but it was quite benign compared to the things I had heard. If you can get over the fact that you're looking at things that were once human and focus on it as one of the best anatomy classes you can get outside of medical school, you'll be fine.

Anyway, on to the exhibit. It started off with a simple look at some of the organs in our body. The skeletal system, the nervous system, the digestive system, the reproductive system, the respiratory system and the cardiovascular system were all covered at some point in the exhibit. After a few skeletons, of the type you are usually shown in an anatomy exhibit, there were some plastinated bodies with the layers peeled back to show different areas that you wouldn't normally see unless you were doing a dissection. The bodies were all in very simple positions to begin with, swinging a bat or reaching. By the end they seemed to be running out of ideas of how to pose it to make people interested, which led to the dissections being done in a more artistic way, which I wasn't so sure about. For the most part though, it was very well done. Through the exhibit, I got to understand that beauty really is skin deep, and that if you take off that upper layer, we all look pretty much the same. I had a good time once I got over my reservations, and focused on applying what I had learned in my anatomy course.

Physical Science

Reflection

For our Physical Science lesson today we went to the Electricity exhibit at the Franklin Institute. It started out pretty good, with a selection of Benjamin Franklin's electricity experiments and some notes on them. However, the rest of the exhibit seemed to be mostly hands-on stuff that didn't really teach you that much. There were signs there to read, but the whole exhibit seemed geared towards children, who weren't reading the signs. However, there was some good information in there if you looked hard enough, so it wasn't too bad. Also, we got to see a huge Tesla coil being fired at the end of the exhibit, which was very cool!

I started my Novel Writing study today by going to the Growing Stage for the Actor Speaks class, which I believe can be counted under novel writing because of the techniques I'm learning through it. Today, we went through our four-word line scenes. Jake's was very good, and I think mine, while a bit unclear (because I could only use four words per line), was pretty good. After that, we discussed where our stories were going and then worked with the actors for a bit. I need to work on a few of my scenes to make them a bit clearer.

Human Anatomy and Biology

Reflection

We started our our Human Anatomy and Biology Lesson today by watching a lecture about the eye, which sends raw information to the brain, which makes sense of it. First, we watched a video on this topic and then I answered two questions to show what I had learned. Then we found out about the physiology of the kidneys and the urinary system, and I answered two questions about the physiology of these fascinating areas. Lastly, I read some more of The Human Brain by Rita Carter, and got up to the section on sight.

Physical Science

Reflection

For our Physical Science class today we started by recapping what we learned about quantum physics in the last lesson, and then moved on to radioactivity. We learned a bit about atomic fusion and fission, and how this science was used to create a devastating weapon. Then we looked at the different particles that exist inside an atom (there are a LOT), and the really confusing (for us laymen) attempts at a theory to unify everything. Lastly, we looked at Edwin Hubble and some of the ideas put forth to explain certain elements of our expanding universe. It was really interesting lesson!
