The Great
Backyard Bird Count 2/17-2/20/12
The
2012 GBBC will take place Friday, February 17, through
Monday, February 20. Please join us for the 15th annual count!
The Great Backyard Bird Count
is an annual four-day event that engages
bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time
snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can
participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as
little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you
like each day of the event. It’s free, fun, and easy—and it helps the
birds.

and grasslands in this fascinating region.
The field trip begins at 8:45 am at the Wallkill River NWR headquarters
parking lot on Rte 565 north of the town of Sussex. The trip and
runs through mid-afternoon, with an optional extension to dusk in order
to seek out emerging Short-eared Owls from their day roost. Bring
weather appropriate clothing, binoculars, spotting scope, and lunch.

Fiber classes
will resume again in Blairstown or your area if a group of 5 or more
can be arranged.
Feb. 29th felted soap classes will be offered for our first series of
felting. It is geared towards beginners and is great for children
ages 5-105, boy or girl. Felted soap is fun, easy to make and
very useful, it is almost like enclosing the organic soap in a
washcloth. As the soap dissolves, which can last 3 weeks if
properly cared for, the felted pouch can be reused. Classes are
$10 including materials and will last approximately 45 minutes. I
am aiming at a 10:30 start time but can be flexible if there is a more
appropriate time that will accommodate more families. When
classes are held at the Blairstown location we will take time to go out
and visit with our fiber source, our 4 alpacas.
The weeks following we will work on projects such as:
Painting with felt, making tapestries
Making a cellphone/ipod camera case
Make a felted bag
Felting a book cover
Prices will vary as the amount of supplies will change with the size of
the project. Prices will be kept as low as possible to only cover
the materials, I will gladly give my time to teach this great fiber
technique to both children and adults who are also interested.
For more information please feel free to contact me, I will gladly
answer all inquiries! Please feel free to forward this to anyone
who might be interested. We will also hold after school classes
for school children or working parents, too.

Know
a young artist?
Encourage
them
to travel through time with this year’s Doodle 4 Google
Have your children or students doodle their way to a college
scholarship and a technology grant for their school!
At Google, we believe in dreaming big. This year, we encourage kids to
do the same as they put their creative twist on our logo with the
theme, “If I could travel in time, I’d visit...” Since you registered
last year, we wanted to make sure you and your children don’t miss out
on the fun this time around.
As always, Doodle 4 Google invites K-12 students to express a theme as
creatively as possible using Google’s logo as their canvas. The fifty
State Winners will win an all-expense-paid trip to our New York City
office. This year’s winner, along with having his or her doodle
featured on our homepage, will take home a $30,000 college scholarship
and a $50,000 technology grant for their school. And as an added bonus,
the winning Doodle will be featured on a special edition of Crayola’s
64 box!
We hope you’ll get everyone in on the fun (but please – just one doodle
per child!). All submissions must be postmarked by March 20th and
received by March 23rd so there’s not a moment to wait! Check out
www.google.com/doodle4google for more details.
And beyond that – ready, set, doodle!
