In my
Lifetime Fitness Credit, I
started
out
by
going
for daily walks with my mom, which allowed me to keep in
shape, but wasn't terribly strenuous. I also vacuumed the house and
did other chores, which helped. After a while, I started lifting
weights and doing push-ups in the morning, which helped me build up
my strength a bit more. I also danced, and the stretches I learned
were very useful. When the weather started getting warmer, we started
gardening, which gave me a lot of exercise and had me weeding and
planting. We also went on hikes, which were very good for me. Lastly,
in the summer, I began riding my bike around the neighborhood, which
was wonderful exercise.
I started by cooking
in the kitchen with my mother, learning how to prepare many gluten-free
recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. As time went on, I amassed a
large number of recipes, which I put into a recipe binder. At the
beginning of the course, we watched a Teaching Company Course entitled
Nutrition Made Clear, which gave me a good understanding of diet,
exercise and choosing good foods for my personal diet, and helped me to
prepare my own person nutrition plan for a healthy life after I
graduate high school. After we finished this course, we moved on to
Medical Myths, Lies and Half- Truths, also by the Teaching Company,
which was excellent and debunked some diet and medical myths that I
thought were true (such as waiting for one hour after eating to go
swimming; you can swim right after if you want). With each of these
courses, I answered questions about each lecture, which I sent to my
mentor, Nurse Practitioner Karen Cook, to be reviewed. To finish the
course, I organized my recipe binder into a personal cookbook, which I
can continue to use after this course is finished.
Mentor's Evaluation:
Jack sent me a summary of his
cooking experiences, answers to nutrition related questions and a
collection of kitchen-tested gluten-free recipes. He kindly gave me
permission so his recipes could be shared with my patients who have
Celiac disease. I feel he did very well on Medical Myths, Lies and
Half-Truths as well. I reviewed lecture summaries and questions, as
well as looked at recipes from Jack's gluten-free cook book, to assess
his progress.
