Basic Math and Algebra 1 Credit
(2008-2009)
In my Basic Math and Algebra 1
credit, I first worked on the Algebra 1 course from The Teaching
Company, which consisted of 30 DVD lessons and a workbook to test what
I learned in each video. My father was an invaluable help
to me while working through this course, as I had a hard time getting
it at the beginning. However, I soon got the hang of algebra, and
finished up the course mostly on my own. As the credit is Basic Math
and Algebra 1, we also did some basic math. I worked through the books
How
Math Works by Carol Vorderman, Go Figure by Johnny Ball, the Penrose
books, the Illustrated Dictionary of Math by Usborne and Tessalations
by Robert Fathauer with my dad. I also worked on the
Teaching Company's Basic Math course, which, as was to be
expected, was just revision of things I had already learned.
Geometry
Credit
(2009-2010)
In my Geometry Credit, I worked on the Geometry course from The Teaching
Company. The Geometry course had 24
forty-five minute lessons. There was also a workbook for each, to test
what I had learned in the courses. I also worked on the lessons
in my Designing and Drawing Tesselations book, which was fun and made
me think about tesselations in ways I hadn't before.
Algebra
2
and Trigonometry
Credit
(2010-2011)
I
started out by working on the Algebra 2 course from the teaching
company, which was paced over 30 half-hour lessons. I started by
learning about adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing
polynomials, then branched out into rational inequalities and other
interesting subjects, before finishing with an introduction to
trigonometry. This worked well, as my next course was Life of Fred:
Trigonometry. It was a funny book that managed to present the
different ideas and equations needed to get trigonometry, without
being boring. I learned about everything from the beginnings of
trigonometry to an introduction to calculus. In December of 2010, I
began using Ace the Math on the SAT and just worked through the
algebra and trigonometry problems. It was quite a complex book, and I
had to look up some of the concepts which I had forgotten, so it was
a good recap.
Basic Math and Algebra 1 are actually two
separate quarter credits, but I combined them here because they were
originally together.
