The Schoolhouse Log: September 2010

Jack started back homeschooling formally on Tuesday 7th September, after Labor Day. We had some ups and downs with Jack's Clonlara Online Highschool, but it appears that everything is sorted now. Lorna started teaching an American Government class on Mondays and we have some great trips planned; including one to Washington DC. She also started tutoring a young lady called Alex. Jack won't start his playwriting class at Growing Stage until the beginning of October.

We enjoyed a PPL (Pennsylvania Power & Light) program, presented by Mike Dennis. It was entitled "Traditional Earth Skills" and we got to try out various forms of hunting weaponary and our primitive fire making skills! We also presented our "Going to Seed" walk twice, on the third weekend in September: Once for a local library, and the second time for PPL, at their Martin's Creek nature preserve. The feedback has been encouraging, and we enjoyed sharing our love of wildflowers and the fun of identification. We also gave out some native seeds, so hopefully there will be even more native wild flowers around the area in the Spring.

On Friday 17th September we celebrated Constitution Week, by opening the church to visitors, and supplying coffee and light refreshments. The Monday homeschooling group rang the bells at 4pm to mark Constitution Day. We had a few visitors and the young people enjoyed chatting to them about their work, and talking about the history projects from previous years, that were on display.

At the end of the month we loaded up the truck with vegetable oil, hooked up the Airstream, and headed for Maine for the Common Ground Fair - run by MOFGA, the Maine Organic Farmer & Gardeners Association. Take this link to follow us on that trip.
